A Thought for the week
Week of August 30
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.” 1 Samuel 16:18
As we talk about the rise of David to becoming king, I wanted to highlight some stories we are going to hear on a Sunday morning. Between his anointing and his fight with Goliath, David gets to meet Saul for the first time. Saul is being tormented by a spirit that is making him “mad.” It is suggested that someone who can play a lyre might help Saul. It is suggested that David could come and help.
We often think of David as king. We even interject that view in his life before he becomes one. The story of David starts not in kingship but humility. A shepherd and a lyre player; nothing grand. What was important in this story is that God used David in the simplest way; he used his musical talent to help Saul. When you serve God do not feel that your gifts are not important because it doesn’t matter. God uses you no matter what gifts you have.
